Before we quote
Five questions, and then a price that holds
We ask these before quoting anything, including a single wardrobe. It takes a moment and it is the difference between a price that holds and a price that changes when we arrive.
- 1
What floor, at both ends?
It is the single biggest difference between two otherwise identical jobs, and it is the question most phone quotes skip.
- 2
Lift or stairs — and does the lift take a mattress?
Plenty of blocks have a lift that will not take the one thing you need it to take. Worth knowing in advance.
- 3
Where can a van legally stand?
Not the road — the actual address. The distance from the standing position to your door is carried twice.
- 4
Is anything genuinely big?
Corner sofas, American fridges, wardrobes built in the room. If we know, we bring the right kit. If we do not, we find out on your stairs.
- 5
Will somebody be there at both ends?
Especially on a collection from a seller. Nothing stalls a small job faster than an empty flat and an unanswered phone.
Why it matters
A phone quote with no questions is a number somebody plans to change
It is entirely possible to give a price without asking any of this. Plenty of firms do, because a low number gets the booking and the conversation about stairs and parking can happen later, on your doorstep, with the van already outside.
That is not a pricing method. It is a negotiating position, and it is one you enter from the worst possible place — with everything you own in boxes and nowhere else to go.
Five questions take almost no time and they remove nearly all of that. If a quote you have been given did not involve any of them, it is worth asking why.

One item, one room, one van or a whole place — and the floor at each end. That is genuinely most of what we need to give you a price that holds.
