Why it’s its own job
The item is the entire job, so the measuring is the entire preparation. Whether it goes through the door, round the turn and into the room is the only question that matters, and it is answerable before anybody drives anywhere.
The seller is usually not the customer. On a marketplace pickup we are collecting from somebody who has no interest in the process, may not be in, and will not have moved it to the door. That has to be arranged rather than assumed.
There is nothing to absorb a mistake. On a house move a forgotten item goes in the second load. On a single item there is no second load, which is why we confirm the exact address, the exact item and the exact access before we set off.
Nobody should pay for a house-move crew to carry one wardrobe. A firm built for households will quote a single item as a household job minus most of it, and that number is always wrong.
